Week 09: Progress

Changes for design development

Personal feedback:

  • Provide shade structure on upper level and connection entry at Coal loader tunnels (parasitic architecture)
  • Link upper level to lower levels - another circulation space? open?
  • Need more connection points between areas
  • Artists spaces linked to water, extrude over water, extrude from existing sandstone wall, stairs to water level - Carlo Scarpa
  • Link design to the water - reflection, access
  • resolve entry - walk through typography, secracy
  • Explore place and experience - circulation space
  • Open chute ideas - keep experimenting for access to below?

Sam's feedback:

  • The idea of a parasitic form attaching itself to the Loader is powerful - look more closely at Coop Himmeblau work (like the Vienna office building and Lebbeus Woods).
  • The proposal should bear on / interrupt / de-laminate the existing structure.
  • There should be some idea of secrecy or the unseen.
  • Work up an axo of the overall site to work on the connection between zones.
  • Further explore the walkways which connect the bottom of the site, the seawall (careful with the buttresses), and the topof the Loader.
  • How can lookouts / jetties / projections over the water be achieved? Now work more intensively on the top of the Loader
  • how does the landscaped element hold the whole zone together?
  • Think about elevating zones, enclosing others, where the limits between spaces are.
  • Work towards a concise understanding of the external and internal exhibition spaces now.

Week 08: Concept Design

The conceptual design phase of the project combining my knowledge and interpretation of the site combined with the main design ideas and themes. I presented plans, sections, experimental models & sketches and photomontages to explain and present my design proposal.

I focused on the studio tasks to evolve my design and resolved a whole-site design response for the conceptual design presentation.

Week 07: Design Progression

The progression of the works was a collaboration between manual drawings, physical experimental models and computer software including SketchUp, Revit and Photoshop. The 3D computer model was created from the site survey following the relative levels from the AHD.
Image 01: Preliminary sketches of the 'vision', one of many extrusions that will form the upper public spaces of the Coal loader and the same concept for the private art spaces on the lower level of the Coal Loader.

Image 02: Preliminary sketches of the upper levels with staggered landscaping and framed views from the horizontal extrusions.

Image 03: The Initial overall 'vision' of the Coal Loader for both lower and upper levels. For the lower levels I want the existing straight sandstone sea wall to be realigned to create staggered shapes which will incorporate the artists spaces. This will allow the above green roof to extend out on the diagonal planes.

What is your big idea?
How does it relate to experimental art as an idea?
What are the zones in the site you have worked on?

How are they linked?

Week 06: Vertical Movement

Model 01: Experimenting vertical movement through a typical staircase that is encased with an outer shell that could potentially be adjustable. This idea of parasitic architecture which could continue and join areas to create outdoor spaces to coincide with indoor areas. The model also frames views and uses the idea of journey and experience to encourage the visitor through the site.

Drawings from sketchbook, experimenting with vertical movement and connecting the upper and lower spaces.

Model 01: Geometric structure encasing the existing structures to create new public external spaces. - Feedback from sam

Upper level of Coal Loader to be transformed into exhibition spaces, public gathering spaces and link together the artists spaces.

Model 02: Large structured ramp that will link spaces. This will include viewing platforms and a slow transition across the site.

Model 03: Underground circulation space that could include chutes and vertical voids that can support vegetation. These spaces can also link to the artists spaces.
